In the early-morning hours of June 17, the Dryden Police Service was called to a residence on Arthur Street, where neighbours reported that a 34-year-old female had been stabbed by a male.
The male no longer was present, having fled the scene on foot.
The victim sustained serious injuries to her hands requiring medical attention and was transported to the Dryden Regional Hospital.
Dryden Police Service officers, with the assistance of local OPP on-duty units, began to search for the suspect, identified as Derek John Kenny, 38, of Dryden.
DPS then requested further assistance from the OPP’s Emergency Response Team, as well as its Canine and Criminal Investigations Units, to locate and apprehend the suspect.
Kenny was located in his business on King Street but for public and officer safety reasons, police established containment of the building and area.
OPP provided incident command near the location, with DPS officers establishing a perimeter in the downtown core.
A four-block radius was shut down to establish a perimeter to ensure the safety of the public and to allow police to safely resolve the situation to take Kenny into custody.
Just after 9 a.m., six hours after the event began, Kenny exited the building and was arrested by members of the ERT without further incident or injury.
Kenny has been charged with attempted murder and break-and-enter to a dwelling with intent to commit an indictable offence.
He will remain in custody pending a bail hearing at a later date.
The DPS and OPP Forensic Identification Services are continuing the investigation.
