With Christmas just three weeks away, Emo undoubtedly will be the place to be this weekend.
The annual “Holly Daze” festivities kick off there Friday with the United Church bake sale from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Thread Shed, but the real action is slated Saturday.
Cloverleaf Grocery will begin its official grand opening with a public tour of the new store at 10 a.m., with the ribbon-cutting scheduled for 10:20 a.m.
NDP leader and local MPP Howard Hampton, Emo Reeve Russ Fortier, and representatives from the contractors who helped build this state-of-the-art shopping facility will be on hand for the ceremony.
There’s even a rumour Santa will put in an appearance—as well as another one concerning reduced prices at the Cloverleaf gas bar. You’ll just have to come out to see for yourself.
What’s not in question are the other activities at the store. Emo councillors will be bagging groceries at Cloverleaf on Saturday while others will be serving free coffee and cake to customers at the sit-down coffee shop that’s part of the new store.
In addition, there will be a clown at the entrance greeting customers (there apparently is no truth to the rumour it will be Emo Coun. Ken Fisher) as well as various giveaways, face-painting, and live music.
A barbecue also will be going there all day.
Elsewhere in Emo, the United Church bake sale continues from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with a craft sale (also featuring soup and sandwiches) running from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Legion.
And St. Patrick’s Church will hold a tea and bazaar from 1-3 p.m.
Outside the arena, children can have their pictures taken with Santa between 2-4 p.m. for $1. All proceeds will go to the Emo food bank.
As well, Harold Kellar and his Percheron draft horses will be offering complimentary wagon rides there between 3-5 p.m.
At the outdoor rink, there will be skating and a bonfire from 2-5 p.m., with the Emo Rec Council and Emo Fire Department selling hotdogs and chili to take the edge of the chill.
There even will be free hot chocolate to wash it down.
Festivities end Saturday with two draws for $250 in Emo Bucks and a fireworks display at dusk (around 6-6:30 p.m.)
Don’t miss it!
