Lock it or lose it, says OPP

Press Release

(Sioux Lookout, ON) – Warmer temperatures and spring weather have increased foot traffic on our local streets, as well as crimes of opportunity. Members from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are requesting assistance from the public in preventing these crimes by securing their vehicles and keeping valuables out of sight.

On Wednesday morning, May 13th, 2020, Sioux Lookout OPP officers received a report of a vehicle having been stolen from Prince Street. The owner arrived home to find a silver 2007 Dodge Magnum had been taken from the residence sometime after 10 am on May 12, 2020. The vehicle had been left unlocked. The OPP is requesting that anyone with information about this incident contact the Sioux Lookout Detachment at 807-737-2020 or 1-888-310-1122.

The OPP remind the public that auto theft and theft from vehicles can be prevented by following some simple steps:

  • Always roll up your vehicle’s windows, lock the doors and pocket the key.
  • Park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
  • If you have a garage, use it and lock the door as well as your vehicle.
  • Never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.
  • Never leave valuable objects or packages in full view; put them in the trunk or remove them from the vehicle.
  • Keep your vehicle registration certificate/proof of insurance on you at all times.

Although social distancing measures prevent officers from actively checking property as part of the Lock It or Lose It program this spring, the OPP encourage the public to conduct their own property checks.
