I’m sure everyone recalls reading about the MNR employee who was brutally attacked by a black bear in the Thunder Bay area in early October.
Well, not everyone may know the victim was Devlin native Laura Darby, who fortunately is doing very well after surgery and intense medical care, along with her strong, positive spirit and will.
Laura was released from the Regional Health Sciences Centre in Thunder Bay on Oct. 21, but continues to receive rehabilitation as an out-patient—and will for some time.
However, Laura’s family hopes to have her home in Devlin soon.
Rainy River District sends Laura reassuring thoughts and prayers as she continues her recovery.
We can’t even begin to imagine what you, your family, and those involved in this shocking event went through but we are all so pleased to know you’re on the road to a full recovery.

Sylvia Beadle will be honoured with an 80th birthday party this Saturday (Nov. 5) from 1-4 p.m. in the common room at Flinders’ Place in Fort Frances.

Another baby recently entering the world was Addison Dawn Bond, who was born to David and Angela Bond on Oct. 14, weighing in at eight pounds, 11 oz.

There will be a Remembrance Day supper on Friday, Nov. 11 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Emo Legion.
Tickets cost $10, which are available at the Emo Legion, and everyone is welcome to attend.
There also will be a free-will luncheon at the Emo Legion on Remembrance Day starting at 1 p.m.
Cenotaph services will take place in Devlin at 2:30 p.m., then at Emo at 3 p.m.

The 50/50 draw held at the Emo Legion on Friday night (Oct. 28) was won by Tara Smith, who pocketed $837.50.

Sympathy is extended to Bob and Betty Grynol and family on the passing of his aunt, Kay Duchnicki.
Kay was a vibrant lady who always had a smile and a kind word. I remember many a wonderful meal served at Bob and Betty’s home with Kay and her husband, Walter.
She was a person who made the world a better place to live.

An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for several years.
He finally went to the doctor, who had him fitted for a hearing aid that allowed him to hear 100 percent.
When the elderly man went back in a month for a check-up, the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.”
“Oh, I haven’t told my family yet,” replied the man. “I just sit around and listen to the conversation.
“I’ve changed my will three times!”
