Local Legion ladies meet

Press Release

The Fort Frances Legion Ladies Auxiliary to Br. #29 met on April 11, with 26 members in attendance.
The charter was draped in memory of Silvia Gunderson, who was a member with 24 years of service and held many positions with the auxiliary, including as president from 2003-14.
Silvia most recently held the position of District Commander for District 7.
Her smiling face and positive attitude will be missed by all.
Helen Brow, meanwhile, was reinstated as a member of the auxiliary. Welcome back!
The position of Ways & Means is still vacant. Any member interested in filling it, or would like further information on this position, is asked to contact president Alfreda Easton at 274-9105.
Thank you to Christina McDougall for taking on the Secretary position for the current year.
In other news, the District 7 meeting was held in Fort Frances on April 6-8, with 45 in attendance.
Representatives from Atikokan, Dryden, Ear Falls, Rainy River, and the Provincial Council were present.
With the passing of Silvia Gunderson, the position of District Commander was filled by Leslie Bell, currently the Deputy District Commander.
The position of Deputy District Commander was filled through election by Sandra Pruys for the ensuing year.
A fun time was had by all.
The 2019 district meeting will be held in Rainy River, with the theme being “The Eras,” so start working on your costumes!
Auxiliary members will be providing support for “Meals on Wheels” deliveries during the week of April 23-27.
A reminder that the auxiliary’s next monthly supper is set for Friday, April 27 at 5:30 p.m. upstairs at the Legion (doors open at 4:30).
Featuring a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, plus dessert and coffee/tea, the cost is $16/plate.
A 50/50 draw also will be held that evening.
Take-outs are available for pick-up calling 274-3772 (before 4:30 p.m. if possible, please).
As well, the annual “Veterans’ Night” is set for Saturday, May 5 and help is needed to make this a success for our veterans.
Contact Alfreda Easton (274-9105) if you can lend a hand.
Entertainment will be provided by Diane Maxey’s choir.
A supper also was held for the local Air Cadets (mac & cheese, hotdogs, and cheesecake) in appreciation of all their help in serving and cleaning up at Legion Auxiliary functions.
Jan Gosman won the attendance draw while Danette Allan won the 50/50 draw.
The April birthday draw winner was Evelyn Gosselin, with birthday cards to Margie Gibson and Christine Eisenzopf.
The auxiliary’s next general meeting will be held Wednesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. upstairs at the Legion.
