Despite the poor weather Saturday, the Emo Lions Club’s annual walk-a-thon attracted 32 participants, who either walked, ran, biked, or ’bladed from the Emo Curling Club to Tom Judson’s gate and back.
T.O.P.S., Ringette, the Rainy River Safety Association, Crossroads School in Devlin, the Sea Cadets, and Girl Guides were among the organizations that took part.
Freeda Carmody of Devlin was out bright and early while a Mine Centre teacher, who had run both directions, said it was a good day for this occasion to raise money.
Wayne Nixon, on his bike, and his daughters, Angel and Rylee, on rollerblades, thought the same. They did not rush—instead taking their time to enjoy the route and Mother Nature’s beauty.
Most of the walkers went out in groups to make the trek more pleasant.
At the end of the day, the event raised $2,700, with half going back to the participating organizations and the other half designated for Lions Club community projects.
Lions members Wayne Barron and LaVerne Tibold registered the participants at 9 a.m. at the curling club while Joe Tibold, Cecil Ogden, and Bob Dimit manned the canteen to serve the runners once they arrived back.
Ralph Wolframe guarded the railway crossing for safety while Larry Jack and Leonard Jordens registered the participants arriving at the checkpoint at Judson’s gate.
