Lightning strikes were the cause of three new fires confirmed in the Northwest Region yesterday afternoon.
Red Lake Fire #22, located near Little Vermilion Lake, was listed as “not under control” at two hectares in size.
Red Lake Fire #21, located near Sparling Lake, was reported as “under control” at 0.1 ha.
As well, Red Lake Fire #20, near Old Shoes Lake, was “not under control” at 0.5 ha.
In related news, crews on Red Lake Fire #17 continue to work the southern flank of the blaze.
Several other fires are being monitored across the north in the Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Nipigon districts.
A reconnaissance flight was undertaken yesterday to re-assess these fires.
Nipigon Fire #18, a monitored fire in the far north of Nipigon District, has been declared “out” at five ha.
The forest fire hazard, meanwhile, is “low” across the southern sectors of the region and “high to extreme” in the far north.
Rain is in the forecast for the next few days.
