Ministry of Natural Resources fire crews investigated a smoke report and confirmed a small 0.1-hectare blaze started by lightning had occurred about 60 km east of Fort Frances.
This fire is now out.
FireRanger crews and overhead staff presently are assisting with emergency response flood concerns in Thunder Bay District, and helicopters are being used to monitor water levels and road washouts.
Meanwhile, agency representatives and FireRangers who were deployed on fire assignment in Manitoba returned home yesterday.
Ontario firefighting resources have been assisting Manitoba with an escalated fire situation there since late May.
Equipment also has been loaned to Manitoba, including 2,000 lengths of hose and 50 water pump kits.
The fire hazard currently is “low” across most southern sections of Northwestern Ontario. The far north has not received as much recent rainfall, so the fire hazard there ranges from “moderate” to “high.”
While it may rain in the north, crews and helicopters remain on alert at the northern Red Lake attack base to respond to any fires that may occur in these areas.
