Kenora OPP warn of Retirement Teddy Bear Fund fraud scheme

By Times Staff

Kenora OPP are warning of phone call scams targeting members in the community, and want to remind the public to be vigilant.

On Monday October 5th, 2026, the Kenora OPP detachment received a report of fraudulent phone calls to the public asking for donations to a fake OPP Retirement Teddy Bear Fund.

Kenora OPP is warning the public that this charity is not a legitimate donation fund, and warning the public to be very cautious of unsolicited emails, text messages, and phone calls. These communications are often malicious attempts to steal financial or personal information.

The OPP offers several Tips to protect yourself from being taken in by these scams.

  • Be cautious of unsolicited calls requesting access to your computer, banking apps, or personal information, especially those that pressure you to act immediately.
  • Legitimate companies will not use aggressive or high-pressure tactics to obtain access to your devices or financial information.
  • Be wary of requests involving unusual payment methods such as wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
  • Never use the phone number or email address provided in a suspicious message – check verified websites for contact information instead or visit your local bank branch in-person to verify

To help prevent victimization, please share this information, especially with those who may be at risk. If you suspect you’ve been the victim of cybercrime or fraud report it to police at 1-888-310-1122 and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s (CAFC) online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
