Kayaker rescued

the OPP

Thunder Bay OPP received notice yesterday afternoon of an overturned kayak on Black Bay of Lake Superior.
Earlier in the day, a group of people went out kayaking and a woman became separated from the others.
A short time later, the group noticed she was missing and at that point it was discovered the kayak was overturned.
The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre from Trenton were contacted, and a local Coast Guard vessel and Hercules aircraft based from Winnipeg were dispatched.
A search of Black Bay was conducted by the OPP marine unit, Coast Guard and an Auxiliary Coast Guard vessel, and a search-and-rescue Hercules aircraft.
The 53-year-old woman from Thunder Bay was located on an island in a hypothermic condition by Coast Guard medics.
Through a joint effort, the woman was transported back to shore by the OPP marine unit and tended to by Emergency Medical Services before being transported to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further medical attention.
Police want to remind people to dress for the weather and wear proper safety gear no matter what activity you might be participating in.
