Coun. Gary Judson was appointed to the handi-van committee during Emo council’s regular meeting last Thursday.
Four communities—Chapple, Devlin, Stratton, and Emo—are partnering with Meals on Wheels, a not-for-profit corporation, to continue the handi-van service in the district.
Each municipality will appoint one member to sit on the committee.
Emo Reeve Russ Fortier said they still are awaiting final word on the Trillium funding they requested.
In the meantime, the committee has begun comparing costs of purchasing a new van versus repairing the old one.
Emo council also discussed recycling issues last Thursday night, noting four bags of garbage recently were left at the recycling depot.
“We need some co-operation on recycling,” Reeve Fortier stressed.
Emo council approved a regular payment of $1,591.95 to Greg’s Recycling for services in June, 2005.
Council also discussed a request from Gary and Carole Beauchemin and Keith and Faye McCready to have camping grounds in Emo.’
Reeve Fortier noted a campground can be an expensive proposition if outfitted with water and hydro hook-ups, as well as someone to supervise it.
“It’s pretty hard to get your money back on that investment,” he remarked.
Couns. Judson and Ken Fisher noted that, if approved, the most appropriate location for a campground would be behind the ball diamond.
Since this property is owned by the Emo Fair board, the matter was referred to it.
Also at last Thursday night’s meeting, council:
•appointed Rick Vanderaa to the Emo-La Vallee Community Centre Board;
•voted to renew the township’s contract with the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board for child care service at the Emo Toy Library and Resource Centre; and
•voted to support a request from the board of the Northwestern Health Unit that the Thunder Bay District Health Unit be re-established as the lead health unit in the delivery of the Ontario Tobacco Strategy (the Ontario government had moved the strategy from Thunder Bay to Sudbury).
Emo council will hold its next meeting on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at the municipal office.
