Journal closing doors after 111 years

The International Falls Journal will join the growing list of closed newspapers across North America. After 111 years serving its community, the Journal will publish its last edition tomorrow, June 24. Joining in the closure will be its commercial printing division, North Star Publishing.

Although Journal staff were not free to comment on the closure, the company issued a statement citing the pandemic and other financial trends to blame for the move.

“Like many businesses this past year, the impact of the pandemic on The Journal and North Star Publishing has been dramatic. These challenges, when combined with other difficult economic trends, have forced us to make this difficult decision,” the statement said.

Roughly 1,800 newspapers have closed across the U.S. since 2004, with the majority of them being community based news.
