A group of six “gypsies” are in jail here after being nabbed through a joint effort by the Atikokan Police Service and Fort Frances OPP.
Sgt. Tim Fairbairn of the Atikokan Police Service said this morning that on Friday afternoon, a group of six people entered a store on Main Street in Atikokan.
Upon leaving the store, it was discovered cash had been removed from the office area.
This was reported to the Atikokan Police Service, who immediately launched an investigation and reported to area law enforcement agencies that a group of suspected thieves was in the region.
A vehicle containing the six suspects was stopped in the Fort Frances area by local OPP, who detained them here.
Atikokan Police Services then came here to verify the suspects, who subsequently were charged with theft. Two of them also were charged with breach of recognizance.
The six were remanded into custody at the Fort Frances Jail and a search warrant was obtained to search their vehicle.
Sgt. Fairbairn said this morning the results of the search are not being revealed at this time because the investigation is ongoing.
“They’re pretty good at what they do,” he noted, adding the group used diversionary tactics to commit the theft.
Sgt. Fairbairn noted the suspects are believed to be from the Toronto area as that is where they have been linked with some previous criminal activity.
