Jack pine budworm program approved

The 2007 Insect Pest Management Program to control the jack pine budworm infestation for Fort Frances, Dryden, and Kenora districts has been approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The jack pine budworm—a destructive insect—caused defoliation of about 450,000 hectares of jack pine forest in Northwestern Ontario between 2005 and 2006.
The Insect Pest Management Plan has been developed to reduce the impacts of this insect through several methods, including re-direct harvest and the aerial spray of the biological insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) beginning on or about May 22, 2007.
There is a formal opportunity for the public to examine the most recent information and maps from the Insect Pest Management Program, prior to its implementation,
The inspection period is set from March 5-April 5.
During this time, the public may make a written request to the minister of environment for an individual assessment of the specific proposed activities of the program.
It will be available at the MNR offices in Fort Frances, Dryden, Kenora, and Atikokan during business hours (8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m.)
For more information or to view the program outside of business hours, contact plan author Eric Kaufman at 274-2161.
