IGNACE — Ignace is looking for home builders. Specifically, the township along Highway 17 is inviting proposals for a 46-unit subdivision.

The municipality has issued a “negotiated request for proposals,” or RFP, for the development of the Mayotte Agimak Terrace Subdivision near Davy Lake Road.

The RFP comes as Ignace officials expect a local economic boom with the proposed construction of a multibillion-dollar nuclear waste repository west of the township.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization aims to begin construction of the deep-underground facility in the early 2030s, if the project clears regulatory and licensing hurdles.

The industry-funded NWMO also plans to build a 100,000-square-foot Centre of Expertise in Ignace, which was chosen as the repository’s host municipality last November.

“This is such an exciting time for our community, and we are so delighted that we are issuing our first-ever request for proposals on a potential new housing subdivision in Ignace,” Mayor Kim Baigrie said in a news release from the township.

“The economic development opportunities associated directly with the upcoming site selection of the NWMO Centre of Expertise, the eventual development of the deep geological repository, and other potential developments is driving the township to ensure we are well placed and in a positive position to house prospective employees, new residents and families who may be part of our community in the future.”

The Township of Ignace is seeking proposals from qualified developers to purchase and develop 46 fully serviced residential lots for development that could start next year, township spokesperson Jake Pastore told Dougall Media on Wednesday.

The municipality also seeks proposals for building on 215 un-serviced residential lots nearby and on a six-acre block designated for multi-residential development, he said.

The RFP is posted at Biddingo.com, an online portal for public sector tenders.

“It’s very exciting to hear this news that Ignace is looking for people to submit proposals for a major subdivision,” said Vince Ponka, regional spokesperson for the NWMO.

“This really does just show the growth that’s coming to the town.”
