Sufficient ice has formed to allow Voyageurs National Park staff to stake the Green Snowmobile Trail between the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and the Ash River resort community.
Travel elsewhere on frozen lake surfaces within Voyageurs National Park is unsafe and not recommended due to insufficient ice thicknesses and other hazards.
The continued lack of snow cover has created very rough and predominantly bare ice surfaces.
Overland safety portages have little snow cover and exposed rocks are prevalent.
Numerous days of temperatures below freezing level, followed by an appreciable snowfall, are required for better snowmobile travel conditions.
Meanwhile, cross-country ski trails in the park are not yet open due to lack of snow.
Vehicles should not attempt to travel over any lake surfaces within the park due to thin ice.
