‘Ice-out’ official

Staff

The ice is now out on the north arm of Rainy Lake.
Several local residents reported that boaters should be able to get anywhere on the lake as of yesterday.
This is a far cry from last year, when “ice-out” didn’t occur until late May.
“Ice-out” on the north arm of Rainy Lake was around May 15 in 2013.
By contrast, “ice-out” in 2012 was April 9—the earliest on record.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, meanwhile, declared “ice-out” on the south arm of Rainy Lake on Tuesday (April 28).
“Ice-out” is considered official there when a boat can travel from Island View to Kettle Falls unimpeded by ice.
