Wednesday night seemed like it was going to be another light air night on Rainy Lake. Then just as Ron Bowman and Roger Johnson steered the committee boat into place for the start of the race, the winds picked up considerably.
In strong northwest winds of ten to 20 m.p.h., the sailors were able to complete all seven legs of a windward/leeward course in a relatively short time.
Taking top honors with a finishing time of 48:40 was Colin Hewitt with his Catalina 25, Ariba. Placing second was Peter Engberg aboard the Lindenberg 26 Wing ‘N It. Third place went to Tim Mack on the San Juan 24 known as Night Moves. A total of seven boats competed last Wednesday night.
Local sailors have been doing well in races around the region. Former Falls resident Jacob Bowman won the Leech Lake Regatta, a three day event in Walker, MN. Ron Bowman placed second in his division and third overall in the event.
While the Bowmans were racing in Walker, Quinn McCarthy participated in several races on Lake Superior. McCarthy crewed aboard Northern Harrier out of Thunder Bay for the International, the Trans Superior, and the Duluth to Bayfield races. Northern Harrier won both the International and Duluth to Bayfield races with a second in the Trans Superior.
