It’s been about a year since a small group of district residents proposed holding an event to showcase local foods in the area.
Now with the assistance of Rural Agriculture co-ordinator Jeannette Cawston, an extravagant harvest dinner is being planned for Saturday, Oct. 13, sponsored in part by the Rainy River Future Development Corp., the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce, and the Clover Valley Farmers’ Market.
“It’s going to be held in a beautiful rural setting at the Kitchen Creek Golf Course,” Cawston noted. “And it will feature mouth-watering fare prepared by well-known chefs.”
The event will be presented in a five-course meal, with a description of each course highlighting where in the district people can purchase the food and how to prepare it properly.
“It’s my job to help promote local food in the district and hopefully the entire meal will be local,” Cawston remarked, adding if there’s an item not produced in the district, it will be from somewhere in the region.
“A lot of our producers direct market right within the region,” she added.
The menu is expected to be prepared by next week.
Cawston stressed the evening will be all about showcasing local food because she noted a lot of people still are not aware of where they can purchase local products.
“We’re inviting everyone,” she noted, adding she hopes many of the local producers will attend, as well as residents from across the district.
They also are planning on having a guest speak and entertainment during the evening.
Tickets cost $50 per person, which will be available at the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce office, the Rainy River Future Development Corp., and other locations around the area.
“Seating is limited so people should purchase their tickets early,” Cawston warned. “It’s going to be an elaborate meal and a great evening—a night to remember.
“I’m really excited about it,” she enthused.
More details about the event will be available in the coming weeks.
