Sioux Lookout OPP, with assistance from the Canadian military, have disposed of a live hand grenade unearthed in the backyard of a Queen Street residence there Tuesday afternoon.
Police originally were notified around 3 p.m. after the homeowner discovered the device in his backyard while rototilling his property.
Police cordoned off the immediate area and notified the OPP’s Regional Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU).
After consulting with the Department of National Defence, the decision was made to have munitions experts from the military attend the scene.
At 1:30 p.m. yesterday, military personnel based in Winnipeg safely removed the device and took it to a gravel pit on the outskirts of town for detonation.
It was described as a 1940s vintage Canadian military hand grenade “pineapple style.” It has a lethal range of 100 metres.
The pin was found to be partially dislodged.
It is believed the hand grenade had been in the ground for some time.
