The Atikokan Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce their involvement this year in the Atikokan Bass Classic 20th anniversary.
In conjunction with the bass tourney, the Chamber is hosting the “Celebrate the North Festival” this week (Aug. 13-17).
Atikokan Bass Classic competitor’s weigh-in Friday and Saturday afternoons at the event tent downtown (at the pool/arena lot), and the festival will build on that excitement. (A full schedule of events is available at www.atikokanbassclassic.com)
Comedian Moccasin Joe, an excellent Thunder Bay cover band, “Tea Time Drive,” and an Atikokan version of the popular Amazing Race television show, have been added to the schedule of events for the “Celebrate the North Festival.”
Moccasin Joe proved to be popular at a prior visit to the Atikokan Hospital. His presentation then, “Healing through the Spirit of Humour and Laughter,” is actually an outgrowth of his stand-up comedy act he is bringing to the Bass Classic’s big tent on Friday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m.
Moccasin Joe is a fictional, stereotypical Indian character developed by Thunder Bay’s Leonard Dick (who boasts Ojibway, French and Scottish heritage). It’s an adult show—age of majority is required tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce, Fashion Fabric, and Tramin Ltd for $10.
On Saturday, non-anglers will get a chance to participate in Atikokan’s first Amazing Race, courtesy of the ladies of the Legion Auxiliary. Teams of four people (with one a designated driver) will be required to meet a set of challenges. (Although we said non-anglers, that might not be altogether true. An Atikokan Amazing Race could well include a fishy task!)
A digital camera will be required, and the race will have all the components of the show, including detours, fast forwards, roadblocks and yields. Registration forms can be picked up at the Royal Canadian Legion ($40 per team). The race starts at noon on Saturday.
Both the festival and the bass classic will wind up Saturday evening with a street dance, featuring “Tea Time Drive.” The band’s current playlist of covers includes over 50 songs, representing dozens of entertainers and styles, from Trooper and AC/DC, to Kool and the Gang, Queen, Garth Brooks, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Bob Marley, Shania Twain and Sheryl Crow.
The week’s line-up also includes a brimming “live well” of kids’ events, such as a sidewalk sale downtown tomorrow starting at 1 p.m., “Fun with Fish’ program with CO Ben Slack and Atikokan Bass Classic “Kids Land” on Saturday starting at noon.
