There were four new fires in the region yesterday, including one in the Kenora District and four in Sioux Lookout District.
But as of yesterday evening, only three fires were still burning in the West Fire region—a 0.2-hectare blaze in Sioux Lookout District and a pair in Nipigon District comprising a total of 801.2 ha in size.
Progress continues on the 800-ha Nipigon Fire #20 as crews continue to consolidate hose lines around the entire fire perimeter. An investigation indicated the cause was recreational (a campfire).
Some areas of the region have reached a fire hazard that requires forestry operations at high risk to start a fire to shut down. The fire hazard is “medium to high” here in Fort Frances District.
Aerial detection flights are scheduled to fly patrols over areas that have received lightning recently, and recreational areas also will be monitored by aerial patrol watching for any wildfires caused by recreational outdoor fires.
The West Fire Region has seen 174 fires to date, burning a total of 924.5 ha. Fort Frances District has seen a total of 25 blazes, consuming just 14.1 ha.
