Three new fires were confirmed in the northern parts of the Northwest Region.
Nipigon District fire #50 is a lightning-caused fire currently classified as “not under control.” It is 50 hectares in size.
Sioux Lookout District fire #43 was discovered yesterday while doing a northern reconnaissance flight.
This fire is lightning-caused and is estimated to be 80 ha. in size. There are no values in the area and this fire will be monitored because it is very remote.
Kenora District fire #34 is in the area of Blindfold Lake and FireRangers and air attack are responding to this fire.
There are no values reported in the area. This fire is estimated to be one ha. in size.
The forest fire hazard is expected to change dramatically with incoming precipitation working its way across the region from Manitoba border.
But until such time that rain is in the gauge, FireRangers and air attack will remain on high alert. The Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts may not see with change in weather until later in the week.
There are over 45 active fires in northwestern Ontario and this number is changing daily.
At this point in time there are no communities directly threatened by these active forest fires. Values protection has been established on some remote properties and structures and will remain in place until such time it is safe to remove this equipment.
While Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Dryden and Kenora all experience low fire activity, they are supporting the northern districts with personnel and equipment.
In addition to these regional resources, 20 FireRanger Crews from the Northeast Region are now fighting fires in northwestern Ontario most of which are in the Red Lake District.
Sharing resources such as personnel, equipment and aircraft is common practice in the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services program.
