Fix-it Club in need of project materials

Submitted by Rebecca Wood

The Rainy River Fix-it Club located next to the Firehall in the north section of the Rainy River municipal building was formed to provide shop space and tools for people to work on their own woodworking projects as well as working co-operatively on projects that benefit the group and the community.

We have all admired the skillful construction of the train outside the shop which will eventually make its way to Hannam Park. Members have also worked on projects large and small for their own use. We are fortunate to have a wide assortment of hand and power tools at the shop and enthusiastic members who will show you how to use them safely.

The first meeting of 2020 was held on Tuesday, Jan. 14. There were lots of ideas and suggestions being discussed for this new year. While we were talking about things still needed for the shop, there were comments like, “oh no! I just took some of those to the dump!” We realized then that if people knew that we needed things they might think of us when they had useful items that they no longer need.

If you have something you would like to donate please call Bill 852-3192 or Gord 852-4489. Some items currently needed are lumber, LED lighting, Larger flat screen monitor and a motor for a Delta saw.

Jack Elliott is donating some of his specialty bicycle servicing tools to establish a bike repair station. Plans are to hold some bike servicing clinics later this winter as well as a youth bike safety rodeo this summer. The station will also serve as the centre for the Cycling Without Age service facility, providing recreational rides for seniors or other mobility challenged residents. Inquiries about the cycling station can be directed to Jack at 807-852-3790.

Planning is underway for some projects restoring old railway items. It was mentioned that CN might help sponsor railway projects. This brought up a conversation about the need for a historical society in Rainy River (call Bill for more on this). I think we all agree that the town needs more interesting activities and events to encourage people to Live in Rainy River. Perhaps this year it’s time to take an interest in our town and bring some energy and enthusiasm back by getting involved with a project or group.

Someone is generally at the shop on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Monthly meetings are at 10 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. Elections will be held at the March meeting. Annual dues are $30.00, payable at the Town office.
