The forest fire scene has heated up in the Northwest Region, with a total of 26 new fires since Friday.
Fort Frances District saw its ninth fire of the season Friday—a human-caused blaze sparked in the Morson area.
It is now “out.”
There currently are four active fires in the region, including three in Kenora District and one in Thunder Bay District.
These four fires are covering a total of 276.3 hectares.
Since April 1, there have been 67 fires in the region, having consumed a total of 363.3 ha.
In related news, the Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service responded to another grass fire last night in the north end of town.
The fire burned in the area between the curling club and Hammond’s Nursery along Eighth Street.
No structures were damaged.
Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours.
