Eight new fires were started intermittently along the CN railway east of Fort Frances on Tuesday afternoon with a combined area of about 10 hectares.
All fires were in good shape by yesterday morning.
There was a multi-agency response to the fires, including MNR FireRangers, CL-415 heavy waterbombers, the Couchiching Fire Department, the Watten Fire Department, and CNR personnel.
The excellent work by all involved, and quick response, prevented any loss or damage to values adjacent to some of the fires.
Enforcement personnel are conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of ignition on the railway fires.
Fort Frances District also received a report of a fire on an island on Lac La Croix in Quetico Park.
Dryden District, meanwhile, responded to an incident yesterday on the Bending Lake Road, southwest of Ignace, of a truck on fire with concern that the fire might spread to the nearby vegetation and forest.
The fire did not spread beyond the burning truck, however, and no forest fire occurred.
Rain and higher humidity in the region has helped to temporarily ease the forest fire situation across most parts of the region except the southern sectors, including Fort Frances District and the south end of Thunder Bay District, which are still in a “high” fire hazard.
