The Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service will be at Canadian Tire this Saturday (Oct. 5) to get an early start on Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 6-12).
Fire safety specialist Capt. Wayne Riches said firefighters will be there from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and that the public is encouraged to stop by to get fire safety information.
They also can enter draws for various prizes, including a child’s bike.
Riches noted the fire department’s new highway response unit will be on hand so people can get a closer look at it.
The vehicle is stocked with equipment like shears, rams, and the “Jaws of Life” to rapidly respond to automobile accidents.
Riches said the event will be a good chance for the public to check out the big truck, which was paid for partially with grant money and partially with local tax dollars.
As in past years, there also will be plenty of giveaways for both youths and adults.
Firefighters also will be available to answer any questions about fire safety—and it’s possible “Sparky” the fire safety dog will be there, too.
As well, firefighters will be stopping at local schools and talking to students in JK-Grade 2 about fire safety next week.
They usually speak to 500-600 schoolchildren each year.
The theme of Fire Prevention Week this year is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”
