The fire hazard is sitting at “high” for the whole region, with “extreme” hazards in the southern portions of the Fort Frances and Dryden districts, Quetico Provincial Park, Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts, and north towards Geraldton and Nakina, the Ministry of Natural Resources reports.
One new fire was reported yesterday in the West Fire Region.
Nipigon Fire #58 is a 0.1-ha lightning-caused fire currently classified as “not under control.”
Meanwhile, Thunder Bay Fire #60 was reported Saturday—also a 0.1-ha lightning-caused fire burning on an island at Amik Lake north on Highway 527.
It has since been extinguished.
As well, three new fires reported Friday.
Thunder Bay Fire #59 was a 0.1-ha lightning-caused blaze located on Smoothrock Lake in Wabikimi Provincial Park.
Red Lake Fire #45 was a 0.2-ha fire in the Hailstone Lake area that was sparked by trees falling on hydro lines.
And Red Lake Fire #46, near Gull Lake, received response from a FireRanger crew on a Twin Otter aircraft.
All three of these fires have been put “out.”
Red Lake Fire #44, located near Taillon Lake east of Pikangikum First Nation, continues to respond very well to suppression efforts.
FireRanger crews continue to wrap the fire with hose lines and extinguish hot spots.
There is minimal flame on this fire and no problems are anticipated.
