Fire hazard on the rise

the MNR

No new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday evening.
But six fires, most caused by lightning, still remain active in the region, including one in Quetico Park here in Fort Frances District.
Meanwhile, the weather forecast for the region is calling for a drying trend over the next several days.
The fire hazard is reading “high” in Fort Frances District, and all across the far north.
It is “moderate” throughout the rest of the region.
In related news, Ontario now has more than 350 fire staff in Alberta—the largest number of personnel at one time since support to that province began May 17 and the largest contribution of all supporting agencies.
So far, roughly 5,300 person days of support has been provided to Alberta, just over half the total support provided to British Columbia for the entire fire season last year.
An Ontario Incident Management Team will take over management of a wildfire by the end of this week that is Alberta’s largest in 60 years at roughly 4,430 square km.
Out-of-province assistance provided elsewhere by Ontario includes an air attack officer in the Northwest Territories.
