There were three new fires reported in the Northwest Region on Wednesday, but no new fires by early yesterday evening.
One fire near Sachigo Lake in the Sioux Lookout District is “under control” at one hectare in size and two small fires in the Nipigon District posed no problems and were declared “out.”
Fort Frances District responded to a fire report that turned out to be a fire south of the international border in the United States with a U.S. response.
The forest fire hazard is rising and is “moderate to high” in most parts of Northwestern Ontario. Despite recent rainfall, the risk of human-caused forest fires remains and as hot, dry weather continues the hazard will be rising. Under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, day burning of brush and grass fires is prohibited. Such fires are to be lit no sooner than two hours before sunset and be out no later than two hours after sunrise.
Campfires are allowed but must be attended at all times and be put dead out before leaving. People living within an organized municipality should check with their municipal office for local bylaws on burning.
