No new fires were reported over the weekend, with the cool, wet weather keeping the fire hazard “low” in the southern part of the Northwest Region, including Fort Frances District.
But the fire hazard is on the rise in the northern sectors of the region—and nice weather is expected to keep it “high” for the next few days.
The central sectors are in a “moderate” hazard.
There currently are 35 active fires in the region, including one in Kenora District and seven in Red Lake District.
The others are located in Sioux Lookout District (14) and Nipigon District (13).
Infrared scanning will continue on Red Lake Fire #31, with firefighters continuing to patrol fire lines and putting out hot spots.
Clear, mainly sunny weather with dropping relative humidity values forecast for the next few days will help test the fire for flare-ups.
But fire behaviour forecasts indicate that blaze will be confined to the ground and little fire activity is expected.
Meanwhile, a fire is being monitored on Lake of the Woods in Kenora District.
A recent ground survey of this fire has it listed at 2.0 hectares in size and smouldering.
This fire is helping to restore the ecosystem and is being managed under the Lake of the Woods fire response plan.
In related news, provincial resources still are providing support in the Northwest Territories, Manitoba, and Quebec.
In total, there are 40 FireRangers and an agency representative in the Northwest Territories, 60 FireRangers and two agency reps in Manitoba, and 100 FireRangers and nine overhead support personnel in Quebec.
Some of these resources are expected to return from the Northwest Territories and Quebec this week.
