Certainly one of the highlights of the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society’s annual fall fair in Emo is the queen pageant, which wrapped up with the talent show and crowning last Thursday evening upstairs at the Emo Arena.
The five contestants, Ashlee Nordstrom, Lauren Davis, Dana Drennan, Janel Barker, and Alyssa Strachan, first performed their talents.
In between, several local entertainers took to the stage, including the “Dueck4” as well as singers Katelyn Shortreed, Maverick Judson, Milo Smith, and Ashley Jewett.
Then came the big moment, with Ashlee Nordstrom being crowned queen. Dana Drennan was named 1st Princess while Lauren Davis was 2nd Princess. Ashlee also won the Dorothy Bonot Award while Janel Barker was named Miss Congeniality.
Meanwhile, the 2rd-annual loggers’ competition on Friday morning saw eight competitors vying in nine events, including Kelvin Caul, Jason Caul, Orville Smith, Curtis Smith, Waylon Smith, and Glenn Smith (all from Devlin), and Randy Vandenberge and Duane Loveday from Dryden.
Kelvin Caul wound up winning both the champion logger and safe logger titles.
This competition was well attended and even though the loggers were sweating buckets, they all enjoyed this popular event.
Here’s hoping they’ll be back next year to show us all their skills, muscles, and endurance.
I, for one, really enjoyed browsing through many of the photo albums full of history and pictures of previous fall fairs in the exhibition hall.
Amanda Watson has been compiling information and pictures over the years, and the albums are really enjoyable. Thanks, Amanda!

Robin’s 2¢:
The husband had just finished reading a new book entitled, “You Can Be THE Man Of Your House.”
He stormed to his wife in the kitchen and announced. “From now on, you need to know that I am the man of this house and my word is law. You will prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I’m finished eating my meal, you will serve me a sumptuous dessert.
“After dinner, you are going to go upstairs with me and we will make love the way that I want. Afterwards, you are going to draw me a bath so I can relax. You will wash my back and towel me dry and bring me my robe. Then, you will massage my feet and hands.
“Then tomorrow, guess who’s going to dress me and comb my hair?”
The wife replied, “The funeral director would be my first guess.”
