Fall fair offering plenty to do

Staff

The Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society’s annual fall fair is set to go next Thursday-Saturday (Aug. 18-20) in Emo.
And while many district residents go for the rides, see the animals, and to socialize, there’s also many ways people can participate in the annual event.
Mini-King, Queen
One way is to enter your young son or daughter in the Mini-King and Mini-Queen contest.
Contestants must be aged four-seven, with a maximum of 10 boys and 10 girls being accepted.
The contest will take place Thursday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Emo Arena, prior to the Emo Fair queen talent show and crowning.
Call Mary Croswell at 487-1105 to register.
Exhibition hall
Organizers also are looking for new entrants for the exhibition hall, fairboard director Angela Halvorsen said yesterday, noting there’s plenty more room for entries, whether it’s baking, preserves, crafts, woodworking, photography, or any of the other categories accepted.
To enter, check out the 2011 Fair Book, which is available online at www.emofair.com/index.html as well as at various locations across the district, including Crazy Ladies, Rainycrest, Lowes Furniture, and Causeway Insurance here in Fort Frances.
The book not only lists the numerous categories for entries, but contains an entry form as well as the rules.
To enter anything, you must be a member of the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society (the fee is $10, which can be purchased at any time before the fair).
For more information, contact RRVAS secretary Jan Judson at 482-2428 (this weekend) or 482-2238 (at the fair office starting Monday).
Exhibition hall entries will be accepted from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 17), with the exhibition hall to be closed for judging all day Thursday.
Trade show
A trade show is being held at the Farm Progress Building (Emo Arena) on Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20 in conjunction with the Emo Fair.
This is an opportunity for participants to sell and promote their products while at the fair.
The cost is $90 for each 8’ x 12’ space required for the two days (plus $30 if you need electricity), with tables and chairs provided.
“There are normally over 7,000 people that go to the fair so it’s a great bang for your buck,” noted Halvorsen.
Display times are Friday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
The trade show set-up starts Monday, so those interested must call Linda Armstrong (852-3645) as soon as possible.
Jam session
District musicians are welcome to a jam session upstairs at the Emo Arena on Friday, Aug. 19 from 4-10 p.m.
The jam session is not karaoke, so musicians are encouraged to bring their own equipment, etc.
The public is welcome to listen.
For more info or if you’d like to participate, call Charlene Gustafson at 483-5839 or 275-5539.
Fair parade
Finally, everyone is welcome to enter a float in the annual Emo Fair parade next Saturday (Aug. 20).
This year’s theme is “Disney on Parade.”
The parade lineup is at 10:30 a.m. in front of Emo Health Centre, with judging at 11.
The parade will run from noon-1 p.m., starting at the hospital and ending in front of the grandstand.
