Emo summer youth program up and running

If children in Emo are looking for something to do this summer, then they can take advantage of the Summer Playground Program which is running Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of August.
The free program, which started up last week, allows children up to six years of age to participate in activities in the morning from 10 a.m. until noon in conjunction with the Emo Toy Library and Ontario Early Years Centre.
Afternoon activities (from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) are for children ages seven-15.
“It’s going really well so far,” noted recreation/community co-ordinator Sarah O’Sullivan. “We’ve had at least 20 kids every time.”
She explained she and her partner, T.J. Roen, weren’t expecting many children because the numbers for the program weren’t high last year.
“We didn’t think we’d have any kids, so we were happy,” she noted.
Roen said since there isn’t a baseball league in Emo, they chose that as one of the afternoon activities.
“We’ll also have water fights, scavenger hunts, and they seem to like ‘Capture the Flag,’” he added.
Relay races, obstacle courses, T-ball, and a watermelon eating contest are also scheduled for the younger children, while dodgeball, basketball, tennis, and hockey are some of the activities for the older kids.
“It gives them something to do,” O’Sullivan stressed. “And it gets them active instead of just sitting around.”
Like previous years, a car wash fundraiser is being planned but a date has not yet been set.
O’Sullivan and Roen spend the rest of their week cutting grass, watering flowers and painting, but heading the Summer Playground Program is the highlight of their job.
“Tuesday and Thursdays are the best,” O’Sullivan enthused. “We get to spend the day playing and getting a tan.”
“It’s great that we get to be outside,” added Roen, citing all kids in the community are welcome to come out a participate.
July schedules were mailed to residents, but if anyone was missed, they can be picked up at the municipal office. August calendars will be mailed out near the end of this month.
