For the first time in the history of the Emo-Devlin-Barwick Minor Hockey Association, a tournament was held within a tournament as the PeeWee girls combined their games with the boys.
And according to organizers, everything went without a hitch.
The four-team girls’ tourney featured host Emo squaring off against Taylor International (Fort Frances), Skates and Blades (Fort Frances), and the Dryden Hurricanes.
Emo came into the tourney as the favourites with their strong defence and explosive offensive. Another big plus was Jaycey Ewald in goal, with fast reflexes and strong skating skills to cover all angles around the net.
In their first game against Taylor International, Emo jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Carlee Bosma (Emily Lougheed/Lauren Krukoski) and a pair by Taylor Meyers (both unassisted).
Krukoski (Bosma) made it 4-0 in the second before Shanna Ewald (Meyers) iced the victory with a goal with three minutes left in the third.
Emo next faced Skates and Blades, jumping out to a 2-0 lead en route to a 3-1 win.
Krukoski (Bosma) gave Emo the lead at the eight-minute mark of the first, then Kailey Curtis (Rebecca Mills) tallied just over two minutes into the second.
Skates and Blades cut the lead to 2-1 just seven seconds later when Haven Labbe (Tressa Galusha) hit the twine.
But Curtis scored her second, from Nicole Beadle, at the nine-minute mark of the third to ice the win. to give the locals a 3-1 win.
Emo’s third game against the Dryden Hurricanes also was a close contest, with Emo skating away with another 3-1 victory.
This time, Dryden hit the scoreboard first on Lauren Shoguchi’s unassisted tally. But minutes later, Meyers (Krukoski) knotted the game at 1-1, then Jessie Baker (Bosma) put Emo ahead to stay just 30 seconds later.
Bosma (Curtis) netted the insurance marker with 30 seconds to play in the game.
Emo also cruised through the semi-finals, blanking Taylor International 6-0 to earn a berth in the final.
Meyers, Bosma, and Krukoski all scored in the first to give Emo a 3-0 lead. Kim LaFleur and Meyers drew assists. Then in the second, Krukoski netted her second marker unassisted.
Baker (Bosma/Nicki Mosbeck) made it 5-0 a minute later, with Krukoski completing her hat trick in the third to round out the scoring.
Meantime, Skates and Blades nipped the Hurricanes 4-3 in the other semi-final.
Labbe’s hat trick had put Skates and Blades up 3-1 after two. Labbe then added one more in the third which proved to be the margin of victory. Harley Labbe and Shawnee Morrisseau drew assists.
Alex Wesley, Kyley Engstrom, and Lauren Shogucki replied for Dryden, who then went on to play Taylor International in the ‘B’ final.
Kali Hamilton scored both goals, once each in the first and second periods, as Taylor International prevailed 2-0 over Dryden to win the ‘B’ crown.
Chelsea Hill and Kartina Wreggitt assisted on Hamilton’s second goal.
Finally, it was no contest in the ‘A’ final between Emo and Skates and Blades as the host crew led 3-0 after one and 6-1 through two before scoring four more times in the third to cruise to top honours.
Krukoski and Meyers led the offensive onslaught with four goals, with Nicole Beadle and Kaitlyn Ferris adding singles. Meyers, LaFleur, Mills, and Curtis also drew assists.
