At the Oct. 14 Council meeting, Reeve Russ Fortier welcomed council and mentioned he was looking forward to another three years of working together to accomplish the many projects that have been planned for Emo.
The roof replacement project on the Emo Water Treatment Plant is progressing well by contractor, Ron Redford. It is anticipated the roof project will be completed on schedule.
A verbal report on the new sports field project was given by Councillor Harri Sheloff, chairperson for the Emo Rec. Council. He noted that the plans for the next two weeks are to install fencing at one of the proposed ball diamonds. The Rec. Council anticipates to complete all further projects at the site with volunteer help. The Emo Rec. Council would appreciate anyone interested in volunteering their time to contact the Emo Municipal Office at 482-2378.
Renovations are progressing at the Emo Curling Rink under direction of Grant Meyers and Nevon Bonot of the Emo Rec. Council. The Emo Curling Rink is being renovated to provide a multi-use facility for the community.
The construction of a heliport pad is underway at the proposed site located east of the Emo Cemetery. It is anticipated the project will be completed in the next two weeks.
An application is being completed for funding assistance through the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program, to upgrade the Township of Emo’s emergency response equipment.
Brenda Cooke, Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer gave a report to council on the Water and Wastewater Recovery Workshop, attended by Ed Bullied, Water & Sewer Operator, and Brenda Cooke, in Thunder Bay, on Oct. 9, to learn more about Bill 175–Sustainable Water and Sewage Systems Act.
The Act will require the municipality to prepare two reports for submission to the Ministry of the Environment.
The municipality will be required to prepare an inventory of the infrastructure, and a management plan providing for the long-term integrity of the systems and address the full cost of providing the services.
Discussion was held on the operations of the Emo Landfill Site. Council noted they are very pleased with the condition of the site. The new hours of operation at the Emo Landfill Site are Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1p.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursdays 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Councillor Gary Judson was requested to attend the MOM’s Way meeting scheduled on Oct. 24, 2003 at the Patch Restaurant in Warroad, Mn.
Council agreed to proclaim the week of Nov. 24, to Dec. 1, 2003 as Canadian HIV/AIDS Awareness Week. Also, council agreed to designate Nov. 5, 2003 as the “Child Care Worker & Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day.”
Council fully supported the Northern Ontario Youth Action Partnership in their efforts to prepare an outreach campaign to stop the massive youth out-migration from our communities by helping create a climate that is encouraging for young people to stay in the north.
