Emo council ready for new term

At its inaugural meeting held Dec. 1, Emo council reviewed the request for final payment to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. for the Emo Fire Department equipment upgrade project, including a new fire truck.
Council felt the project’s objectives and goals had been accomplished by ensuring reliable and efficient fire protection for the Township of Emo and surrounding communities.
Council also passed a resolution requesting the Ontario government take immediate steps to increase funding for the Trillium Foundation from $100 million to $150 million, and further that the funding formula be amended from $7 per capita to $10.
The application process also should be streamlined to allow easier and faster approval of Trillium Foundation funding.
This funding assistance would greatly benefit charities and non-profit organizations, enabling them to provide valuable services to the residents of their communities.
John Stadlander and Scott Abick, representing the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing in Thunder Bay, met with the Emo council and the Emo planning advisory committee on Wednesday, Dec. 10 to discuss the five-year review of the township’s official plan as well as to review guidelines pertaining to minor variance and consent to sever applications.
Discussion also was held on the preparations of a Life Cycle Study for Emo’s water and sewer system.
Once a study is prepared, council will hold a public meeting to inform taxpayers on the cost to replace worn-out equipment and to upgrade the water and sewer distribution system.
Council also was very appreciative of a donation received from the Emo Legion in the amount of $350 to assist in the upgrade of the Emo cenotaph, including wreather hangers and benches for seating.
