Students of Emmanuel Christian Academy in Fort Frances earned several medals at the Regional Junior Convention hosted by Portage Christian Academy on Feb. 3-4 in Portage La Prairie.
About 100 students aged seven to 12 from nine schools competed in a multitude of events in academic, athletic, art, musical, and platform categories.
The highlight was the PACE Bowl (a Reach-for-the-Top type of competition), in which the team from Emmanuel Christian Academy–consisting of Joshua Johnston, Emily Laing, Kristine Solum, and Zachary Johnston–won first-place honours.
Joshua Johnston and Laing also took first place in the puppet competition with their original presentation.
Other first-place showings were by Zachary Johnston in table tennis (boys’ aged seven to nine) and in ball free throw, and by Johnston in the skipping marathon (ages 10-12).
Local second-place winners included Cheyenne Vandermeer in table tennis (girls’ seven-nine), Joshua Johnston in table tennis (boys’ 10-12), and Emily Laing in sewing.
Mitchell Laing took third place in table tennis (seven-nine).
And Joshua, Zachary, and Luke Johnston, Mitchell Laing, and Kristine Solum teamed up with two players from another school to take second place in the dodgeball tournament and third place in indoor soccer.
School principal Faye Edwards and assistant Lois Rogoza certainly are proud of their students.
While there, everyone was entertained by ventriloquist “Uncle Harold” and his puppet pals, Willy and Holly, and by his “Brighten the Corner Where You Are” (which featured Bible story-telling with accompanying sketches at the evening banquet and morning rally).
In other news, Calvary Tabernacle has a youth pastor in Rev. Bill Meade, who hails from a small community in Newfoundland. He attended Eastern Pentecostal Bible College, graduating last April with a Bachelor Theology degree.
He comes from a family of five, and this is his first assignment.
“I enjoy this friendly atmosphere here,” he said, adding it is enjoyable and he’s adjusting very well to the community.
Also coming to Calvary Tabernacle on Thursday, March 30 is a missionary service with guests Don Raymor and David Forest.
Meanwhile, Pastor Laing’s wife, Carol-Leah, now holds credentials with the Pentecostal Assembly of Canada (PAOC) as a licensed minister.
She is on her way to being ordained as a minister into the Christian ministry.
