A 550 hectare forest fire prompted an emergency evacuation of Red Lake last night.
The municipality issued the order Monday night at 9:30 p.m., urging all residents to leave the town as soon as possible.
The fire causing the evacuation is Red Lake 49, located two kilometres northeast of Madsen. It ignited August 10 at 3:44 p.m. The fire is being actively suppressed by water bombers.
The fire has crossed Hwy 618, forced the closure of the highway to both directions of traffic, with no detour available, according to the OPP.
Fire conditions in the region were extreme yesterday, with high westerly winds. Today’s forecast is calling for warm, dry conditions to continue.
The town has offered help to all those who are considered vulnerable, including those with no means of transportation, no support, those with breathing difficulty and those with accessibility concerns. For those unable to leave the municipality on their own, air transportation through the Emergency Management Ontario (EMO) is being co-ordinated to assist in the evacuation.
Residents have been asked to check in at ear Falls, or to register at the Dryden Arena/ Recreation Centre, to ensure they can access support during the evacuation.
Residents have also been asked to check on neighbours to ensure everyone is accounted for.
“It is the safety of our residents that is our first priority. We ask that all residents follow this directive to ensure the safety and well-being of all of us,” said Red Lake Mayor Fred Mota, in a written statement last night.
MPP Greg Rickford has put out a call for lodge and camp owners throughout the region to contact the Norwestario Travel Association, to report any vacancies they have which can accommodate evacuees.
Executive Director Gary Cariou states in an e-mail to tourism industry members, that anyone with space should e-mail him the Lodge name, contact information and number of cabins or beds available. The list will be forwarded to the EMO.
Vacancy information can be e-mailed to info@visitsunsetcountry.com.
A Facebook page has also been created, called Evacuees of Red Lake 2020, where private residents have been offering lodging for people, pets and horses, parking spots for campers, food and supplies, and other offers of support as people flee Red Lake.
