Superintendent of Education Terry Ellwood was seconded from the Rainy River District School Board to co-ordinate a Thunder Bay-Rainy River District project that will encourage students to stay in school until age 18.
The initiative will involve the eight district school boards and 10 district school authorities in the region.
The project, proposed by the Northern Ontario Education Leaders (N.O.E.L.), will be supported by a $1.5-million grant from the Ministry of Education.
Components of the project will include “Later Literacy,” an alternative education program, transition classes, successful return to school for students who have left, and pathways to employabilities.
As a result of Ellwood’s re-assignment, the Rainy River District School Board has appointed Ian Simpson, principal of Fort Frances High School, to the position of Assistant to the Superintendent effective Feb. 1.
Gord McCabe, currently a vice-principal at Fort Frances High School, will assume the role of acting principal for the school. Meanwhile, Al McManaman was selected for the position of acting vice-principal at Fort High for the duration of the project.
The “Learning to 18” project will start at the beginning of Semester II and be completed by Aug. 31. Ellwood will co-ordinate the project with all Student Success Leaders in the district on behalf of N.O.E.L.
