Diane Maxey is getting her choir’s vocal chords loose and limber for the Choraliers’ upcoming Easter cantata slated Sunday, April 8 at 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church.
The performance will tell the story of Easter through song and narration.
“I am really looking forward to this performance,” Diane Maxey said Tuesday. “This is one of my favourite concerts to put on. The music is just beautiful and it has such an important meaning.”
After only a small number of people turned out for Monday night’s first rehearsal, Maxey is anxious to get some more people on board and is looking forward to seeing some new faces.
“I am hoping to get about 40-50 people in the choir,” she noted. “We have a lot of our regular members joining us again this year but I’m hoping some people who have not sung with us before will come out to be a part of this performance.”
Although she does not hold auditions for new members, Maxey admitted she is particular about what qualities she’d like to see in her singers.
“I want to encourage people to come out and sing with us,” she explained. “The only criteria that I have is that I want people who are able to hold a tune and follow along with the songs.
“I don’t hold any auditions but I do like to have people who can sing a little,” she added. “You don’t have to be a professional singer but I am looking for someone with a good voice.”
With the success of last year’s Easter cantata under her belt, Maxey is optimistic it will be just as enthusiastically received this time around.
“We performed our ‘Mighty Cross’ concert last year on Mother’s Day,” Maxey said. “There were so many things going on at Easter that year that we decided to hold it a bit earlier.
“After that concert, I had a number of people coming up to me asking if I would be holding another one because they had loved the last performance so much.
“I decided that we would but this year we would make it closer to Easter.”
With only three rehearsals left before the performance, Maxey is hoping to have the choir members picked and organized by their March 19 practice.
“I want to have the choir ready to go after the March Break,” she noted. “If they are interested in joining the choir, then they can call me and let me know preferably before the March Break so that I can order books for those people who do not have them.
“If some people do not get to be a part of this performance, I don’t want them to get discouraged,” Maxey stressed. “As always, we will be having our Christmas cantata and we can always use new voices for that performance, too.”
