DYS school council to discuss survey

The school council at Donald Young has distributed surveys to each family to obtain feedback regarding the school, and the results will be discussed at its next meeting March 20.
Other items on the agenda include dress code, JK/SK arrangements at the board and school level, etc. These council meetings are open to all parents and community members.
The DYS school council includes Mike Williams, Gaby Emond, Dan Loney, Patti McNally, Tammy McNally, Bev Hasiuk, Pam Van Heyst, and Kerri Tolen.
Meanwhile, portfolios get students involved in the process of sharing information with others about their successes. When students are well prepared over an extended period to tell the story of their own success, or lack thereof, they seem to experience a fundamental shift in their internal sense of their responsibility for that success.
The pride in accomplishment that students feel when they have a positive story to tell, while anticipating what it will be like to face the music of having to tell their of poor achievement, also can drive them to productive work.
Dr. Richard Stiggins said we can help students see, understand, and appreciate their own continuing journey toward achievement.
“We can help them perceive our expectations of them as less imposing,” he reasoned. “We can help them find and follow the path of success if they learn to do the orienteering themselves.”
This approach allows the learners to feel in charge of, rather than victimized by, the assessment process. It enables them to build the self-confidence they need to keep stepping off the edge into new learning adventures.
Having an opportunity to discuss his/her portfolio influences student achievement positively. If you were unable to attend the March 6 meeting, parents are welcome to arrange with the classroom teacher to come on a different day between 7:30-8:30 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m.
After having participated, if you wish to meet with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress, you can arrange a mutually-convenient time.
Together, DYS can help your child achieve.
In other news, Fort High personnel visited grade eight students at DYS last Tuesday to discuss course and program selections. A reminder course selection forms are to be returned to Ms. Tolen by March 9.
