DYS holds science fair

Students at Donald Young School in Emo held their annual science fair last Tuesday in conjunction with the book sale and display of excellent reading material with teacher Marie-Ann DeGroot in the school gym.
Students had the chance to browse through different selections and purchase books if they desired.
Meanwhile, the science fair was greeted with an enthusiastic approach by the students, who showed how well they had researched their projects.
This year, more than 90 entries were received–and most of them were of high calibre. “We are not being competitive,” noted principal Nancy Fretter.
Holly Williams, for instance, centred her experiment on Breathalyzer testing. The purpose of her project was to compare the levels of alcohol in everyday products such as mouthwash, peroxide, and cough syrup.
Jacob Esselink experimented with moisture, Riley Ogden studies lung capacity while Derek Sigurdson wondered “Does hair insulate better than insulation.”
Sarah Heskins concentrated on fire retardents, Ashlee Nordstrom wanted to see if clean water can be made using dirty water, and Jessica Jackson looked at gravity from different angles.
Heather Williams wanted to know more about rust and its effect using nails immersed in pop, club soda, and water.
Joshua Pollard looked at the human tongue, finding out where the different taste areas are located, while Colin Kaemingh studied plants and light.
Cody Drennan did a project on towers. Samual Nussbaumer worked on fertilizers. Kali Wieringa related to the magic of salt, and Heidi Emond wanted to know more about magnificent meltdown.
Tyler Herman was out to determine if plants grow better when watered with vinegar water or plain water while Jason Pailing evaluated how different material affect the flight of an aircraft.
