On Tuesday around 1:30 a.m., Thunder Bay OPP officers were conducting a RIDE check at the Harbour Expressway near the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Highway 61.
The driver of a 1999 Volkswagon Jetta was observed approaching the RIDE check. The vehicle did not slow down as it approached, and was heading directly towards a parked police cruiser.
Fortunately, the driver noticed the vehicle and slammed on the brakes just a few metres away from it
Officers spoke with the driver and could detect a strong odour of alcohol. He was arrested for impaired driving and found to be well over twice the legal limit.
The 59-year-old Thunder Bay resident was charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol level over 80 mg.
He is to appear in court Jan. 30.
