Draw set for ladies’ playdowns

The draw has been set for the annual Northwestern Ontario ladies’ playdowns, which starts Thursday afternoon at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
The local Kathie Jackson rink, also including Colleen Scrimger, Charlotte Bazylewski, and Stacy Beacham, will open the round-robin Thursday at 2:30 p.m. against Amy Stachiw (Port Arthur Curling Club).
After opening ceremonies at 7:45 p.m., Jackson then will take to the rink at 8:30 p.m. against Christine Eby (Fort William Curling Club).
On Friday, Jackson will face Tara George (Fort William Curling Club) in the 9:30 a.m. draw, then meet Dawn Sauve (Eagles Landing Golf and Curling Club in Dryden) at 2:30 p.m.
The round-robin wraps up Saturday with Jackson playing Angela Lee (Fort William Curling Club) at 9:30 a.m., Michelle Boland (Fort William Curling Club) at 2:30 p.m., and Krista Scharf (Fort William Curling Club) at 8:30 p.m.
Tie-breakers, if necessary, are scheduled for Sunday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The top two teams will advance to the Ontario Scott Tournament of Hearts, with that winner moving on to the national showdown later this winter.
“There’s a good possibility that people are going to see a team from this event that is going to be representing Northwestern Ontario at the national level,” said Tom Fry, who is chairing the organizing committee.
“I’d say probably around a 20 percent chance.”
Spectators are welcome, with window seats available for $10 each. Those interested in purchasing one can contact Rick Grenda at the curling club (274-6667).
Organizers also wish to remind everyone that the Fort Frances Curling Club will be completely smoke-free during the playdowns.
