Downed line blamed for outage

Residents in the west end of the district were without power for nearly an hour last night as the result of a downed power line.
Hydro One spokesperson Daffyd Roderick said this morning the problem was the result of the line, which already was loaded with ice, being disconnected from its conductor by high winds.
A line crew was sent at once to make repairs.
“We dispatched a crew right away and we got everyone back on as soon as possible,” he said. “We knew it was a cold night and we got our guys out there as quickly as possible.”
The downed line was located along Highway 11, just east of Stratton, which Roderick said made it easier to identify and repair in such short order.
The outage began at 7:31 p.m. and affected Rainy River, Atwood, Dilke, Blue, Worthington, Sutherland, Pratt, McCrosson, Tovell, Big Island, Morson, and Big Grassy River.
Power was restored to all areas by 8:23 p.m.
Roderick noted such power interruptions are possible any time there is a combination of freezing rain and high winds. He stressed the public should never approach downed lines—even if they appear to be dead.
Instead, such incidents should be reported immediately to Hydro One by calling toll-free 1-800-434-1235.
