This past weekend, 51 people (of all ages) attended the Normaxx Superior Scholastic Chess Championship in Thunder Bay.
About eight students from Rainy River District schools competed in this event.
Michael Shine, from Crossroads School here in Devlin, wound up finishing 29th overall. He enjoyed meeting folks from Ottawa, Toronto, Timmins, Shoal Lake, and other areas while there.
Michael is likely to return to Thunder Bay for another championship in October.
Congratulations, Michael, on your accomplishment—we’re proud of you!

Sympathy to the family and friends of Jean Booth, who passed away May 15. While attending Jean’s funeral on Saturday, it became very apparent that she was a dynamic woman.
She came to Canada from Scotland as a young wife and mother (as a war bride). She settled with her husband and two children in Burriss, having three more children.
Sadly, she was left a widow at a young age with five children to raise. Things were difficult then and without the conveniences of today (cars, running water, flush toilets, etc.)
However, Jean with a strong will and determination raised her five children and to the day of her death they remained a strong, loving family. Jean spent many years in Burriss enjoying family and friends and helpful neighbours in the community.
She then moved to Flinders Apartments in Fort Frances, where she touched the lives of many and has many awesome friends there.
The last part of her life was spent in the Continuing Care Unit at Rainycrest.
Jean always will be remembered for her delicious scones, shortbread, amazing wit, and, most importantly, her strength as a woman, mother, grandma, and friend.

Robin’s 2¢:
“Doc, I want my sex drive lowered,” said the 97-year-man.
“You’re 97!” replied the doctor. “Don’t you think that your sex drive is all in your head?”
“You’re darned right it is!” griped the old man. “That’s why I want it lowered!”
