An Ignace man has been fined $2,000 for allowing his two dogs to be at large during closed season for moose.
Robby Levesque pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 on each of two charges of being the person responsible for a dog and permitting it to be at large during the closed season for moose, in an area usually inhabited by moose, in contravention of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
Court heard that on June 7, the Ministry of Natural Resources “TIPS” line received a call regarding a calf moose that was chased and mauled by two dogs on the Numac Road north of Upsala.
On June 27, the conservation officer investigating the tip located two dogs running loose at a forestry bush camp near Selwyn Lake.
The officer discovered the dogs belonged to Levesque and, based on an eyewitness account and interview with the dogs’ owner, confirmed they were the same dogs that attacked the moose.
Justice of the Peace Gene Bannon heard the case Sept. 2 in Thunder Bay.
