District skater off to all-Ontarios

Kelsey Jonassen, nine-year-old daughter of Lorne and Tonja Jonassen of Rainy River, is on her way to Waterloo on March 20-21 to compete in the Trillium Star Skate Championships (all-Ontarios).

Only the top six skaters in the Pre Preliminary Ladies Freeskate semi-finals moved on to skate in the finals the following day. This made a final with a total of 12 skaters to compete for the top three positions.
The top three qualified for the all-Ontarios.
The competition at Sault Ste. Marie showcased many talented skaters from places like Marathon, Sudbury, North Bay, Mattawa, Lake Superior, Timmins, and many others.
These girls all held their own and proved to be every bit as competitive as the other clubs.
The EFSC has a total of 32 skaters registered this year (this includes the mini blades, Canskate, preliminary, junior, and senior programs). They skate anywhere from two to six days a week.
The skaters have achieved many successes and continue to show how strong the local club is.
This, in part, should be credited to the incredible coaching staff the EFSC has, beginning with head coach Marie Josee Potvin from Fort Frances.
In addition to the head coach, the club also has Penny McComb and Nicole Campbell, also of Fort Frances. Junior coaches include Sarah McComb of Fort Frances, Brandy Hyatt of Devlin, and Athena Pirkl of Rainy River. The club is very lucky to have each and every one of these coaches available. This allows the skaters to get a lot of one-on-one coaching.
Jonassen began skating when she was two in Rainy River. She skated with the Rainy River Figure Skating Club for five years and now has been skating with the EFSC for three.
This is her second year of competitive skating.
Coach Potvin was extremely happy with how all the girls skated and they more than met the expectations she had for them. These skaters continue to show improvement as they each set new goals for themselves.
“We will see great things from each and every one of them,” said Kelsey’s mother.
Congratulations to all the girls on the wonderful job they did. And good luck to Kelsey at the all-Ontarios.
