District education assistant receives Premier’s Award

Press Release

On April 16, the Ministry of Education announced the recipients of the Premier’s Awards for Teaching Excellence—one of which was awarded to Rainy River High School education assistant Lorie Kuzyk in the category of Excellent Support Staff.
The awards celebrate the outstanding individuals who work in Ontario schools and school boards, and the recipients will be in Toronto to be recognized at a special ceremony on May 5 in conjunction with Education Week.
Kuzyk’s energy and enthusiasm for education can make even disengaged students embrace learning.
An educational assistant for 18 years, she never stops anticipating and addressing the needs of her students—particularly those who face barriers to success.
She has brought in used clothes and cut hair for students who struggle financially, and she tutors students after hours who struggle academically.
Plus she does this in a way that preserves their dignity and privacy.
“Lorie is very well-respected by staff, students, and the community for her dedication to excellence in support of student learning,” said Jack McMaster, director of education for the Rainy River District School Board Education.
“Her involvement on the graduation committee, ‘Later Literacy,’ and many school fundraising events has benefited many students over her career,” he noted.
I congratulate Lorie and thank her for her daily commitment to improving the lives of our students.”
“This was a humbling and rewarding experience,” said Cynthia Mulligan, chair of the selection panel and education specialist with Toronto’s Citytv.
“The calibre of nominees was outstanding, and they clearly demonstrate the impact one individual can have on our students,” she added.
Over the last three years, more than 3,000 nominations have been received and 58 individuals recognized.
